Fire safety program recognized

Brandon’s implementation of the Learn Not to Burn program has received a grant in recognition of its success, just as this year’s program is ready to kick off in school.

Learn Not to Burn will launch this year with a lunch-time event on Friday.

The program provides age-appropriate fire safety material for children from kindergarten through Grade 3.

Each year, new fire-safety behaviours are described, up to a total of 14, covering both fire safety and burn prevention. It’s presented in both English and French, and there are translation tools online that extend it to 10 languages at brandonfire.ca/learn-not-to-burn.

In 2012, the program reached 2,586 students belonging to 127 classrooms in 19 schools — a 10 per cent overall increase in student participation from the year before.

The success of the program, which has been ongoing since September 1997, has drawn some attention.

Brandon Fire and Emergency Services is this year the recipient of the FM Global Fire Prevention Grant, worth $2,500 — money that will help produce the printed material that will be distributed to students this year.

Brandon is the first fire service in Manitoba and only one of five fire services in Canada to receive a FM Global Fire Prevention grant for fire prevention efforts.
