WINNIPEG — A six-year-old girl, the daughter of former University of Manitoba jazz instructor Jimmy Greene, was killed in the mass shooting at a Connecticut school on Friday.
Terry Janke, senior pastor for the Whyte Ridge Baptist Community Church, confirmed the news Friday night.
Greene’s daughter attended Sandy Hook Elementary School, where the mass shooting occurred in Newtown, Conn., on Friday. A vigil was held to remember the little girl, whose family attended the church before moving to Newtown earlier this year.
“The people who came tonight were all from our church … there were probably 50 or 60 people that were here, and were just comforting each other and praying,” Janke said. “Many families were here because they were friends with the little girl that died.”
Her father, Jimmy, an accomplished jazz saxophone player, taught at the U of M for four years.
Greene’s wife, Nelba Márquez-Greene, a licensed marriage and family therapist, worked the past two years teaching at the University of Winnipeg.
Their daughter had attended Linden Christian School in Winnipeg before the family moved to Connecticut where Jimmy Greene is from originally.
