Former supervisor accused of fraud, theft

The former supervisor of the Sunrise Credit Union in Holland faces charges after an audit uncovered about $84,000 missing from the branch.

RCMP in Treherne were alerted on Jan. 16 that an employee was suspected of stealing from the financial institution. A forensic audit was subsequently completed that apparently confirmed the missing money. Mounties called in the Financial Integrity Unit to help with the investigation, which found that the money had been taken through various fraudulent means between 2010 and 2011.

A former branch supervisor of the credit union was arrested on April 20 and has since been charged with fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000 and falsifying documents.

Dona Smart, 56, of Holland,is scheduled to appear in court in Portage la Prairie on June 4.
