As temperatures struggle to get above zero so far this year, a deeply frozen ground has water lines across the city icing up — a risk that could continue for some time, until the ground thaws.
The city’s public works department says that homes and businesses with frozen pipes currently have to wait between 24 and 48 hours before crews can provide thawing services.
If they can’t get to the pipes within that window, they may also resort to installing temporary water supply lines.
Anyone with a frozen water line should call the city’s meter shop at 204-729-2192, or leave an after-hours message at 204-729-2285.
So far this year, the city says 160 locations have had frozen water pipes, and there are still 274 locations where the city has said that taps should be left open to prevent freezing.
