Brandon Fire and Emergency Services personnel responded to a gasoline spill at the Heritage Co-op Gas Bar on Sixth Street around 10:15 a.m. on Friday.

Children from a daycare were among those who were briefly evacuated from nearby buildings following a large fuel spill.

A car reportedly collided with the hose of a fuel truck that was at work at a gas station and caused a spill that left a pool of gasoline on the ground.

"The driver of the truck estimated it to be possibly 200 to 300 litres of fuel on the ground," Brandon Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Scott McDonald said.

Firefighters were called to the Heritage Co-op Gas Bar on the 600-block of Sixth Street at 10:15 a.m. on Friday.

A fuel tanker truck had been pumping gas into the station’s underground holding tank when a customer’s car reportedly hit the hose. That broke a coupling that connected the hose to the underground tank, and that in turn caused the fuel leak.

Firefighters managed to prevent the gasoline from getting into the sewer system, McDonald said. They used sandbags and specialized diking material that was stored on scene to contain the gas. Sand was spread on the spill to sop it up.

As a precaution, the gas station/car wash was evacuated along with a neighbouring building that contained a daycare. There was a risk that gasoline vapours could build up in the buildings and ignite.

However, the kids and daycare staff were safely able to return to their building by mid-afternoon.

The 600-block of Sixth Street was blocked off for hours but it, and the gas station, reopened by 5 p.m.

Manitoba Conservation was called in to oversee cleanup. A department spokeswoman said there appear to be no environmental concerns as the fuel was contained to the asphalt and isn’t believed to have seeped into the ground.

Cleanup had largely been complete by mid-afternoon Friday.

Nobody was injured during the incident and there’s no word of any charges against the driver of the car that rammed the hose.
