Girl 'flipped out,' hit Crocus Plains teacher: Students

Crocus Plains high school students report that a popular teacher was hit in the head with a guitar by a female student, although further information isn’t available from education officials.

Brandon School Division board of trustees chairman Mark Sefton confirmed that he’d heard of the incident which is said to have happened on Monday.

“I have, but I have no details,” Sefton said on Wednesday, adding he was informed of the matter by BSD Supt. Donna Michaels.

The Brandon Sun tried to reach a number of education officials for an account of what happened, including the teacher who is said to have been hit.

The teacher directed questions to Brandon Teachers’ Association acting president Alison Johnston who said she couldn’t go into details due to privacy concerns.

“Because it’s a personnel issue, I’m unable to make a comment ... I need to respect the confidentiality of my members,” said Johnston, who directed questions to the BSD and added she isn’t able to comment on any injury the teacher may have received.

School administration directed questions to Michaels who wasn’t available for comment by press time on Wednesday but will be available today.

Meanwhile, some Crocus Plains students supplied a general account of what happened, although none of the students spoken to by the Sun witnessed the incident themselves.

They say that on Monday afternoon a girl who is 16 or 17 years old hit her teacher with an acoustic guitar.

“Somebody broke a guitar over his head, I think,” one student said.

“That’s what I’ve been hearing around the school,” added another.

The girl, who is said to carry her guitar “everywhere,” was reportedly about to make a presentation to her class when she “flipped out.”

She was ready to make her presentation but apparently felt that the teacher was taking too long to prepare the class. She started “freaking out” at the teacher who told her to go to the school office.

The girl started to walk away and, when she was followed by the teacher, turned around and “smacked” him in the head with the guitar, students said.

One student indicated that she understands the guitar didn’t actually break from the impact.

There’s no word of the condition of the teacher, but there’s no indication that he was seriously injured. One of his students said she has had substitute teachers for the last couple of days.

There’s also no word of any possible punishment against the student, although one student who knows her said she hasn’t been seen at school for the last couple of days.

Brandon Police Service Const. Ron Burgess said the police force hasn’t received a report of the incident, so at this point no charges are pending.
