Brandon’s new judge is heading here from Dauphin, but he’s no stranger to the Wheat City.
Former Dauphin Crown attorney Donovan Dvorak — who has been named Brandon’s new provincial court judge — began his legal career here.
“I actually started my practice in Brandon,” Dvorak noted on Wednesday afternoon, following the announcement of his appointment.
Dvorak fills a spot on the Brandon bench left by Krystyna Tarwid, who retired at the end of December.
His arrival will bring the number of Brandon provincial court judges back up to three. Shauna Hewitt-Michta and John Combs also preside over provincial court here.
Dvorak, 46, received his law degree from the University of Manitoba in 1994.
His career began in Brandon as an articling student from June 1994 to June 1995 and he was then a Crown attorney here.
He moved in March 1996 to serve as a Crown attorney in Dauphin, where he most recently held the post of supervising senior Crown attorney.
During his career, Dvorak has assisted in police training and helped to educate support agencies on the subject of child witnesses.
He has been involved in various community groups such as the Dauphin and District Food Bank. Most recently, he was the president of the Dauphin-Swan River Bar Association.
Dvorak was picked form a list of candidates recommended by an independent judicial nominating committee.
The committee was chaired by Ken Champagne, the chief judge of the provincial court of Manitoba.
The committee also included three community members, members of the Law Society of Manitoba and the Manitoba branch of the Canadian Bar Association, and a provincial court judge.
Attorney General Andrew Swan announced the appointment on Wednesday.
“Donovan Dvorak has dedicated his legal career to criminal law and I am pleased to welcome him to his new position as a judge,” Swan said in a press release.
A date for the swearing-in ceremony is yet to be set.
