The City of Brandon has named a new chief of police.

Insp. Ian Grant will take over the position from Chief Keith Atkinson, who has held the role since 2007.

Mayor Shari Decter Hirst made the official announcement at Monday night’s council meeting.

"I’d just like to thank (Decter Hirst) and everyone who’s involved in the selection process and everyone who gave me words of encouragement throughout the entire process," Grant said. "It’s an honour, it’s a trust placed in me."

Grant brings to the position nearly 28 years of experience with the Brandon Police Service, having worked in the patrol division, traffic section, community services/Crime Stoppers section, crime division and administration.

Most recently, Grant was seconded to work with the provincial department of justice from November 2011 to October 2012, where he played a key role in developing the provincial Missing Persons Act and assisted with the development of regulations related to the Police Services Act.

Grant is originally from Corner Brook, N.L. He began his policing career with the RCMP in 1980, and served in Brandon, Wasagaming and Flin Flon detachments.

In April 1985, he became a member of the BPS.

"Police Chief-elect Grant knows the community and its policing needs and that was very important to us as we considered who the city’s next chief of police would be," Decter Hirst said in a statement.

"We needed someone who would be able to step into the leadership role, already equipped with the knowledge of what it takes to facilitate success in the Brandon Police Service. We have found that in Police Chief-elect Grant and we are extremely happy he has accepted the challenge."

Grant will officially begin his new role on Jan. 23.

Outgoing Chief Atkinson will retire on Jan. 25 after a 33-year career in policing.

Over the years, Atkinson has performed a wide variety of duties including uniform patrol, investigations, communications and professional standards.

He served internationally in the United Nations mission in Kosovo, as a civilian police officer. Atkinson is currently serving his second term on the board of directors for the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police as Manitoba director.

He served two terms as the president of the Manitoba Association of Chiefs of Police and is on the advisory board of the Canadian Police College.
