The first of several in-workplace representation voting days available to health-care support service workers within the Prairie Mountain Health region starts today.

According to the Manitoba Labour Board, in-person voting will take place from today to Jan. 31, giving health-care support workers the chance to vote for either the Manitoba Government and General Employees Union or the Canadian Union of Public Employees to represent them.

"With this vote, we will determine which union will represent all health-care support service workers from the three previous RHAs (regional health authorities) that now make up Prairie Mountain Health," said MGEU communications officer Kim Hes.

Once all of the voting ballots are collected, it will mark an end to a lengthy representation vote.

"As it stands right now, each union currently has their own bargaining agreement with the employer and once these votes are done and counted, there will only be one union and one bargaining agreement, which will makes things easier for the members and the employer," Hes said.

Voting ballots were originally mailed out on Jan. 4, but the vote was cancelled due to an administrative error made by the Manitoba Labour Board. Several names and addresses listed on the ballots were incorrect, prompting the labour board to ask voters to discard their ballots.

The Westman region, which includes Brandon, Assiniboine and Parkland, is the last out of five votes. Once in-person voting is completed, it will be up to the labour board to calculate and release the outcome of the vote.

"At this point, the labour board has not provided the MGEU with any dates or timelines regarding the counting of votes," Hes said in an email on Wednesday.

In-workplace voting in Brandon will be held at the Brandon Regional Health Centre starting Jan. 22.

Union members have already been informed on where they can expect to cast their ballot.
