The Heart and Stroke Foundation needs volunteer canvassers to knock on some doors during Heart Month in February.
“We have a large and dedicated base of volunteer canvassers who make the foundation’s door-to-door campaign possible,” said Sue Punter, senior manager for the foundation’s community fundraising programs.
“But we need a few more Manitobans. Even four hours of volunteer time can make a big difference.”
Almost every region in the province needs volunteers, she said. The door-to-door campaign is an essential fundraiser for the foundation, ensuring that there are enough funds to support life-saving research, advocacy and health promotion efforts year-round.
Canvassers solicit donations door-to-door in their community any time throughout the month of February. It takes most volunteers about three to four hours, throughout the month, to canvass the 20 to 25 homes on their route.
The foundation encourages canvassers to create online fundraising profiles at heartandstroke.ca/help, in order to canvass family and friends from the comfort of their own home.
Throughout Heart Month, nearly 6,000 volunteer canvassers visit homes across the province raising funds and distributing brochures featuring important heart health information.
Printed resources for the campaign come from the sponsorship of Qualico.
In the 2012 campaign, the Heart and Stroke Foundation raised more than $629,000 across the province, which helped support 15 researchers in Manitoba with more than $850,000 in funding.
The goal for the 2013 campaign is $696,000.
“Volunteers make a difference. The Foundation relies solely on volunteers and donors to raise funds,” Punter said.
“Money raised supports research responsible for breakthrough medical advances, helps the foundation affect social change, and provides health education to Manitobans.”
