Staff at a city fast-food restaurant likely didn’t think twice about calling police after being threatened by an impaired driver.
He’s one of a number of drunk drivers caught lately after making a stop at a local drive-thru.
“The drive-thru staff are going to start asking people if they want fries with their breathalyzer tests,” Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta remarked in court on Monday as she fined the latest driver to get caught behind the wheel at a drive-thru.
City police were called to the Victoria Avenue McDonald’s at around 4:20 a.m. on Jan. 30.
They were told that an impaired driver had threatened employees as he steered through the drive-thru.
Police arrived just as the suspect’s pickup truck pulled to a stop in the restaurant parking lot.
Two men were in the truck and police determined that the driver had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.
Justin Joseph Boyer-McLean, 21, pleaded guilty on Monday to driving with a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit.
No mention was made in court as to why Boyer-McLean felt the need to threaten McDonald’s staff.
His lawyer, Philip Sieklicki, however, said the threat consisted of legal action and not a threat to do bodily harm to employees.
Boyer-McLean, himself an employee at a city restaurant, received a $1,500 fine and a one-year driving ban.
This case marked the fourth time in a little more than six weeks that a motorist was charged with impaired driving after a stop at a city fast-food drive-thru.
