A woman who had more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in her system when she crashed her car seemed to have little regret shortly after the rollover.
The investigating RCMP officer noted the woman kept smiling as she rode in the back of the police cruiser to the detachment and found the breath test funny.
Initially, she claimed that she’d had little to nothing to drink prior to the crash.
“The accused stated that she feels fine to drive and if she could do it all over again, discarding the collision, she still would have drove,” the RCMP constable wrote in his report.
Rena Rose Castel, 38, of Brandon was the driver of a car that crashed about 10 kilometres east of the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation on the afternoon of July 1, 2012.
The 1999 Chevrolet Malibu spun on the gravel of Provincial Road 455, rolled in the south ditch and wound up on its roof.
Castel and three passengers managed to get out of the wreck by crawling through the back window.
It appears a passerby, who described Castel as “hammered,” picked up her and her three passengers and took them to the Dakota Ojibway Police Service office at Sioux Valley.
An RCMP officer went to Sioux Valley and arrested Castel, who had poor balance, glazed eyes, slurred her speech and smelled of alcohol.
Back at the RCMP detachment, two breath samples placed her blood-alcohol level at far above three times the legal limit.
She admitted driving, but claimed she’d only had one beer in the hours leading up to the crash. She blamed an oncoming truck for the rollover, claiming that it scared her.
There were no serious injuries reported.
More recently, Castel recalls that she may have had seven to eight beers leading up to the crash and indicates she feels bad for the offence.
She has a previous 1999 conviction for impaired driving.
In court on Monday, Judge John Combs sentenced Castel for the July crash to 120 days of house arrest followed by one year of probation, and 50 hours of community service work. She’s also banned from driving for 18 months.
