House arrest for mother guilty of drug offence

A single mom who was caught with a stash of marijuana in her home has been sentenced to six months house arrest.

Authorities suggest that, despite being convicted of possession for the purpose of trafficking, the woman doesn’t see marijuana use as a big deal.

And Judge John Combs noted some citizens wish to have the drug legalized or decriminalized, a view that may become reality some day.

However, Combs also noted that’s not the case now.

“Right now, possession of that substance is illegal,” Combs said in Brandon court on Thursday as he sentenced August Selene Ziprick.

City police raided Ziprick’s Willowdale Crescent home on Dec. 8, 2010.

The raid was a civil affair.

Police refrained from busting open the door of Ziprick’s home. They knew that her two sons, aged three and nine years, would be inside so they knocked instead.

Ziprick answered the door and helped police with their search by directing them to the trash bin which contained a plastic bag that held 28 grams of marijuana.

In a kitchen cupboard, there was a digital scale contaminated with marijuana and a small plastic container that held another 28 grams of marijuana.

Crown attorney Patrick Flynn told court that Ziprick told police that she only sold marijuana to close friends.

Ziprick also told authorities that she’d “gifted” marijuana to a relative and didn’t realize it was illegal to do so.

The plastic container that held some of the marijuana had been labelled with the relative’s name.

Defence lawyer Patrick Sullivan said that his 35-year-old client, who had no previous criminal record, has quit using marijuana herself.

She has moved to Winnipeg where she’s studying business administration with the hope of becoming a certified general accountant.

Combs sentenced her to six months house arrest, with exceptions to her 24-hour curfew that will allow her to attend school and parent her children.
