An inmate faces criminal charges following an assault on a correctional officer at the Brandon jail.
Brandon Correctional Centre Supt. Dave Parker confirmed that an experienced correctional officer was injured during an “unprovoked” attack.
“While performing his duty, he was assaulted by an inmate,” Parker said.
The officer was attacked by an inmate on Wednesday around 12:30 p.m., Parker said. No weapons were involved.
The officer was taken to hospital with unspecified, non-life-threatening upper-body injuries and was later released.
There’s an unconfirmed report that the victim had sustained some sort of injury to his head.
Parker said the inmate was restrained with the help of other jail staff.
The inmate wasn’t injured, Parker added.
Further details of the attack aren’t available, including what sparked the assault.
The police service referred questions to the jail, the jail referred certain queries to a provincial spokesman and the spokesman wouldn’t comment because it’s a police matter.
Parker indicated that the jail will do its own investigation parallel to the police investigation.
Depending on the outcome, the inmate faces the possibility of institutional charges and discipline imposed by an institutional discipline board.
The allegations haven’t been proven in court.
Jeremy Frederick Pete, 31, is charged with assaulting a peace officer and assault causing bodily harm.
He appeared at Brandon court on Friday where he was ordered to remain in custody pending another court appearance on Oct. 29.
