Ever laid $100 underneath Free Parking in Monopoly? Drawn a line connecting Australia to South America in RISK? Even played chess without the queen to give a beginner a chance?
Then you’re familiar with inventing your own “house rules” in a game. But now, there’s a chance this weekend to take it a big step further — how about inventing a whole new game?
That’s the premise behind the inaugural Brandon Game Jam, scheduled to start on Friday at 7 p.m. and run through the weekend.
Whether it’s adding dice rolls to a card game, trying to role-play a rollerblading wizard in the 1970s, or figuring out world domination from the perspective of Attila the Hun, organizers say the only rule of Game Jam is that you make up the rules.
The weekend is open to all comers, and it doesn’t matter whether participants try to craft a video game, board game, card game or role-playing game.
People will be gathering at Westridge Community Centre at 65 Elmdale Blvd. on Friday at 7 p.m. Doors will open Saturday and Sunday as well at 9 a.m. for participants to stay all day making games.
People of all skill and interest levels are welcome, from beginners to hobbyists to people just interested in meeting other gaming enthusiasts.
Although there will be some basic supplies provided, participants are encouraged to bring extras they might need to make the game they want.
Organizers are available on Twitter at @BrandonGameJam or through email at email@example.com.
