Two women have been sentenced to jail for a vicious beating in which they stomped on and repeatedly kicked the victim.
The women each entered guilty pleas in Brandon court on Thursday to aggravated assault.
“This type of behaviour is just not tolerable,” Judge John Combs remarked during sentencing.
Crown attorney Rich Lonstrup said police and paramedics were called to a Birdtail Sioux First Nation home on Sept. 29.
There, they found a woman with blood on her face which was so swollen that she couldn’t see. She also had numerous cuts to her forehead.
Lonstrup said the victim doesn’t remember details of the attack itself.
However, Lonstrup said that shortly after the beating the victim told a friend that the attackers had stomped on her and kicked her in the head.
She also reported that someone, she doesn’t know who, had threatened to set her on fire.
She was transported to hospital and nurses said that the confused victim, who couldn’t see and apparently mistook medical staff for her attackers, exclaimed: “Don’t burn me, I’ll do anything, don’t start me on fire.”
Nurses also noted that the victim’s eyebrow and hairline were singed.
However, the victim was intoxicated and couldn’t see and her attackers had been drinking too. At least one of the assailants maintains that she doesn’t have a clear memory of what happened.
So Lonstrup said he couldn’t prove the fire aspect of its case. He couldn’t prove who would have made the threat to burn the victim or whether anyone did.
Nevertheless, he said, the victim’s injuries which included fractured nasal bones and wounds that required a total of 13 stitches to close, speak for themselves.
The woman’s injuries seem to have had a lasting impact as, more than a month later, they prevented her from attending court.
While she doesn’t recall the attack, Lonstrup said the victim does remember being invited to the home of one of her attackers to drink.
She said that once she’d had enough she tried to leave but that’s when she was dragged down the steps and beaten.
Kelsey Sherisse Chaske, 20, and Deandra Desirae Hapa, 24, both pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.
They each also pleaded guilty to breaching a number of justice orders and Chaske pleaded to an unrelated count of mischief.
Hapa said she didn’t recall much but believes the victim was beaten because she’d refused to leave the home.
Combs sentenced Chaske to a total of 240 days in jail on all charges, minus 39 days in presentence custody.
Hapa — who has a previous assault on her record and was pending on assault allegations at the time of the beating — was sentenced to a total of one year in jail for all her charges, minus 42 days pre-sentence custody.
The two women will be on probation for two years once they get out of jail.
