A ride on a scooter has led straight to jail for a serial drunk driver who violated his driving ban.
In court earlier this week, George Brent Ireland pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified.
He also pleaded guilty to failing to obey a traffic control device and driving an unregistered vehicle.
On Sept. 21 in Souris, around 8:40 p.m., RCMP spotted a scooter travelling along Second Avenue.
The motorized scooter didn’t have any lights on and police pulled the rider over after he rolled through a stop sign.
The rider was Ireland, who admitted that the scooter wasn’t registered.
Police also learned that, starting Oct. 13, 2011, Ireland had been banned from driving for four years after being convicted of impaired driving causing bodily harm.
Police also determined that Ireland had alcohol in his system, although it wasn’t more than the legal limit to drive.
Court heard that Ireland had made the bad decision to ride the scooter after receiving some personal and distressing news. He maintained that he didn’t realize his driving ban included riding motorized scooters.
Within the last 32 years, Ireland, 51, has been convicted of impaired driving-related charges five times.
Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta sentenced Ireland to 30 days in jail on the driving while disqualified charge and fined him a total of $100 for the other two charges.

Perhaps addictions Counselling should be required as well.
