A local Grade 6 student will represent Manitoba in an international French dictation competition this month in Montreal.

Emma Hayter, 12, of Ecole New Era School won both the school competition and the regional finals.

"I’m very excited and honoured to represent New Era and the Brandon School Division," Hayter said.

Hosted by the Paul Gérin-Lajoie Foundation in Canada, La Dictée P.G.L. brings together students from across Canada, the United States and Africa to compete in La Grande Finale internationale in Montreal later this month. One hundred students are expected to take part.

Hayter said she appreciated the extra help her teacher, Gisele Corrigal, has given her to prepare for the competition.

"It’s easy to be proud of Emma," Corrigal said.

"She’s so dedicated, she’s so talented, she makes an effort. We stay in at noon hours and practise together, so she feels more comfortable going to Montreal."

Hayter said the competition is challenging and can be nerve-racking, but it’s something she enjoys.

She plans to put in some extra practice before the competition at the end of May.

The Paul Gérin-Lajoie Foundation’s mission is to contribute to basic education in some of the poorest countries of the world.

"The foundation also helps introduce elementary schoolchildren in Canada to international realities," reads the foundation’s website, fondationpgl.ca. "Through its awareness-raising activities, the foundation hopes to provide children in elementary schools with a wider vision of the world."

The annual dictation competition aims to improve the quality of written French, while introducing children to international realities.

Corrigal said it helps to show students the "bigger picture."

"I think it’s the amount of learning that’s generated in the classroom, the interest that the students have in improving themselves, and learning about other countries and appreciating how lucky we are in Canada," Corrigal said.
