Karen Goodfellow, right, celebrates her big lottery win with her daughter Loni Thompson, left, and grandchildren Emmalie Thompson and Aiden Thompson.
When Karen Goodfellow checked her Lotto Max ticket this weekend, she couldn’t believe her eyes.
The self-checker machine’s display told her that she’d won $250,000.
"I wasn’t sure if I was seeing the right amount, with all those zeros, and I started shaking," Goodfellow said minutes after learning of her win.
Still shocked by her win, the Brandon area resident who works as a cleaner at CFB Shilo said she bought her ticket on Friday at either the CANEX mall on base or the gas station just outside the base.
Usually, she plays Lotto 6/49, but was tempted by the Lotto Max draw this time because there were 50 additional $1 million MaxMillion draws besides the big jackpot of $50 million.
"You can’t win if you don’t play, right?" Goodfellow said.
The Lotto Max draw is made Friday evening and Goodfellow was at the Sobeys south store in Brandon on Saturday afternoon to pick up her son-in-law and his mother when she decided to scan her ticket on the self-checker.
She was hoping to win $5 so she could buy a 6/49 ticket.
It turns out that she’d matched all seven numbers on the Extra.
When the machine showed her that she’d won $250,000, she ran outside to where her daughter, Loni Thompson, was waiting in the van.
"She didn’t even believe it, she came out and got me and said, ‘Can you come and check and make sure this is right?’" Thompson said.
Back inside the store, Sobeys’ staff confirmed the win and mother and daughter began to jump up and down and scream.
Goodfellow, 51, has played Lotto 6/49 once or twice a week for at least 30 years. Her biggest win was $54 in 1985 and she took family and friends out for beer and pizza. She wound up spending more than $70 on dinner.
She said she doesn’t have definite plans for her latest winnings, yet. Although, she said she may pay off her mortgage, for a start.
The winning ticket for the $50 million Lotto Max jackpot was sold in Quebec.
