Local man sentenced for stabbing brother-in-law

A Brandon man has been sentenced to 15 months in jail for an alcohol-fuelled attack in which he stabbed his brother-in-law through the arm.

Billy Joel Cook, 21, told court Thursday that he can’t remember the attack, but pleaded guilty to aggravated assault anyway.

“I’m sorry for what I did, I don’t remember what happened,” Cook told Judge John Combs. “I’m trying to man up for it.”

Cook and several family members, including the victim, were drinking at a home on the 300-block of Second Street on Feb. 25.

During the evening, Cook got more and more drunk and belligerent towards the victim, and there’s no explanation for what followed — Cook was drinking heavily and says he has no recollection of what happened next.

Court heard, however, that he went to the kitchen, grabbed a couple of eight-inch chef’s knives — one in each hand — and returned to the living room where the victim was sitting on the couch. He then began to stab the victim and one of the blades pierced the victim’s left bicep.

The victim used his right hand to hold Cook back while three females disarmed and restrained the attacker until police arrived.

The victim was taken to hospital — the stab wound to his arm had damaged the “radial nerve,” causing his wrist to droop. Police noted that the injury would require plastic surgery.

The females who had disarmed Cook had cuts to their hands that required stitches.

Cook was also sentenced for breach of undertaking by drinking on April 14. He was found passed out outside the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium at Brandon University.

Combs sentenced Cook with a total of 20 months in jail minus five months of remand time, leaving 15 months to serve. That will be followed by two years probation.
