Walmart store manager Michael Humenny speaks to a crowd of around 100 people during the store’s grand reopening at the Walmart Supercentre on Friday.

Brandon’s 170,000 square-foot Walmart Supercentre in the Corral Centre celebrated its official grand re-opening Friday morning, continuing the retail giant’s drive into the grocery market.

The Brandon location — which grew 33,000 square-feet — now includes a full grocer including a bakery, deli, meat department, and produce section on top of its existing electronics, home furnishings and clothing departments.

The world’s biggest retailer added 100 new positions with the expansion, now employing 430 at the Brandon store and said it received 340 applications for positions as cashiers, sales associates, and other hourly duties.

"We’ve been talking about this all year long," said Brandon Mayor Shari Decter Hirst during the opening celebrations, adding the store is "one of the big tourist attractions for the city."

The store also presented various charities with donations during the grand opening, including $18,000 to the Children’s Miracle Network, $10,000 to the Red Cross, $2,000 to the YMCA, $2,000 to the Brandon Humane Society, and $2,000 to the Brandon Food for Thought program.

"We have grown and enhanced the areas customers told us we should and we’re so excited to unveil the results of so many months of hard work," said store manager Michael Humenny.

This expansion is one of 73 planned for the company in the coming fiscal year, which includes various expansions and relocations across the country.

Friday also marked the grand opening of two new Supercentres in the Winnipeg area.
