At first glance, a comment posted on the Brandon Sun’s website earlier this week appeared to be Brandon-Souris Conservative candidate Larry Maguire venting about the nomination process.
The username was "larrymaguireleg govmbca," and the IP address was from the Virden area.
The comment appeared under the story "Poll Shows Liberal Lead In Brandon-Souris," in response to another commenter with the username John Fefchak.
"I am not surprised, considering the way that Larry Maguire was ushered into becoming the only candidate the Fed. Conservative would accept, leaving the other willing candidates outside, wondering ….HOW Come?" Fefchak posted at 11:04 a.m. on Monday.
At 8:45 p.m., the user "larrymaguireleg govmbca" posted:
"How come? Perhaps because some candidates know the rules, do their homework, meet the clearly set out requirements and are prepared to start at a common starting point....this is pretty basic! You move on the puck before its dropped you are waved out of the circle, you jump the gun at a 100 yd dash etc etc. At what point in time are people in highly responsible positions expected to be responsible for their actions when it comes to meeting the basic first steps in attempting to prove their capability to be worthy to fill these roles? I say the application process is a good place to start."
It turns out, according to Maguire campaign staff member Marsha Street, Maguire did not post the comment. However, the comment was posted under his username.
"It was Larry’s assistant’s husband, who was at home on her computer," Street said. "Didn’t realize that they were logged in to the (Brandon Sun) subscription account and made a comment."
Street said Maguire "had no clue" this comment was posted, until the Brandon Sun brought it to the campaign team’s attention.
Street noted the comment was not posted through the Arthur-Virden constituency office and did not come from the office computer.
Maguire stepped down as Arthur-Virden MLA on Friday. The office is now closed until a new MLA is elected.
The Brandon Sun’s request to speak with Maguire on Tuesday was not granted.
