A man who admits to having sexual relationships with two underage girls had an unusual way of trying to get one of the victims to have sex with him for the first time.
“The (offender) had asked (the victim) to have sex with him as a Christmas present,” Crown attorney Grant Hughes said.
In Brandon court on Monday, the 22-year-old man pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault for sex with two separate underage girls as the result of two different “relationships.”
The man can’t legally be named as it could identify the victims.
In each case, the girls had sex willingly but were too young to legally consent.
Hughes told court that the man began “dating” one of the girls in October 2009, when she was 13 years old.
At first, the man told her that he was 18 years old but he was actually 20 when they met. It was only later that the girl learned that he was older than he'd let on.
During their relationship in December 2009, the man asked the girl to have sex with him as a “Christmas present.”
The girl later told police that she wanted to have sex with the man because she felt that they were in love.
They engaged in a sex act, and then had sex weekly until she ended the relationship in January 2011.
Hughes said the relationship and sex with this first girl came to light in March 2012, during an investigation into the man’s affair with another underage girl.
In that second case, the girl told police that her relationship with the man had begun online via Facebook in August 2011.
That resulted in contact in February 2012 and then the exchange of phone numbers and text messages.
She and the man then had sex during a party at a rural home near Brandon on March 2, 2012.
On the way to the home, the girl had made it known to the offender, and two other people in the vehicle, that she was only 14 years old.
Once at the home, the offender mixed her a drink and she also downed 10 shots.
The man and girl then had consensual sex in an upstairs room. Afterward, the man told the girl she was “good” before he left the room.
He returned, but after some conversation he told the girl, “You talk too much,” and left to sleep elsewhere.
Three days later the girl’s stepfather made a report to police, Hughes said.
Defence lawyer Bob Harrison has asked for a pre-sentence report to look at the possibility of a conditional sentence for his client and a sentencing date in May has been set.
Such conditional sentences typically bring house arrest.
