Man accused of threatening to kill entire town denied bail by judge

A man accused of threatening to “kill everyone” in Russell has been denied bail.

Judge John Combs denied Albert Dean Crampton’s release on Monday during the continuation of a bail hearing that began on Feb. 23.

Combs delayed making a decision about bail on that date to allow the defence to gather evidence in an attempt to show that the accused doesn’t pose a risk to the community.

Since then, however, Crampton has run into problems with his lawyer and he represented himself as his bail hearing continued on Monday.

Crampton, 33, faces numerous charges as the result of an incident on Jan. 30.

Crown attorney Ron Toews described the allegations as Crampton’s bail hearing began in February.

It’s alleged that there was a struggle when RCMP arrested a man at a Russell property.

Toews said that the man told police: “I can’t wait to come back here and kill all you cops … just wait until I kill everyone in this town … People in Russell are going to die because of you.”

The charges against Crampton include assaulting a peace officer, uttering threats and breach of probation.

Court heard that the mayor of Russell wrote a letter to the court to express concern about Crampton’s possible release.

None of the above allegations have been proven.

After being denied bail on Monday, Crampton entered not guilty pleas to all of his charges and his trial was set for June 27 in Russell.
