A man charged earlier this year in relation to a traffic stop near Virden that led to a $20,000 cocaine bust is now charged in connection with a fatal shooting in Edmonton.
The man was recently arrested at the Brandon jail and has been sent back to Alberta to answer to the murder charge.
RCMP pulled over a 2007 Pontiac G5 at a checkstop near Virden on May 19 and found 250 grams of cocaine in the vehicle. The drugs had an estimated value of $20,000.
Christian Iyamuremye of Estevan, Sask., was charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking. He was also charged with a number of counts of breaching court conditions.
According to court sources, he was initially denied bail in provincial court on those charges but appealed and was granted release on July 23 after a hearing in Brandon Court of Queen’s Bench. While on bail, he was to live in Edmonton.
On Aug. 13, 33-year-old Dale Maloney was gunned down outside an Edmonton restaurant.
The CBC reported that Maloney was shot several times in the abdomen and two men were seen fleeing the scene in a black SUV. Police say the victim didn’t know the assailants.
The Edmonton Journal reported that police said the shooting was apparently sparked by a verbal argument that quickly escalated
Maloney was originally from the Goulds area of St. John’s, N.L.
On Nov. 8, 23-year-old Iyamuremye was arrested at the Brandon jail on a charge of second-degree murder in relation to Maloney’s death on the authority of a Canada-wide warrant. Court sources indicate that Iyamuremye was living in Edmonton while on bail for the drug and breach charges related to the Virden-area bust.
However, he was caught and convicted of breaching his bail curfew on Aug. 30-31 in Edmonton, was sentenced for that and another charge on Sept. 5 and received six days in jail, essentially time spent in pre-sentence custody.
He was then sent back to Manitoba where, on Oct. 29 in Brandon Court of Queen’s Bench, the Crown attorney applied to revoke bail.
Bail was revoked but then Iyamuremye was granted release again on similar conditions with a cash deposit of $12,500.
But it appears that he couldn’t post the cash required for bail so he was still in custody in the Brandon jail when he was arrested on the second-degree murder charge.
In court on Friday morning, Crown attorney Marycia Kruk requested a six-day remand to ensure that Iyamuremye could be collected by Edmonton police and transported back to that city to face the murder charge.
She indicated that the accused was expected to be on a plane back to Alberta by noon on Friday.
Meanwhile, trial dates have been set in May for the Virden-area drug case.
None of the allegations against Iyamuremye have been proven in court.
