The man accused of leading RCMP on a high-speed chase through the town of Oak Lake before ramming the police vehicle in a failed getaway has been hauled before a judge.
Jesse Michael Degrace, 24, of no fixed address, faced multiple charges in a court appearance on Monday. He’s been remanded into custody.
The charges include dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, as well as charges under the Highway Traffic Act.
Police say an officer was on patrol last Thursday, headed west on the Trans-Canada Highway near Oak Lake, when they spotted a speeding SUV headed the opposite direction.
Despite lights and sirens, the SUV didn’t stop, and instead sped through the town of Oak Lake before ending up on a dead-end road. The SUV made a U-turn and ran head-on into the police vehicle before the man inside was arrested.
The suspect needed hospital treatment in Virden. The police officer received only minor injuries.
The SUV turned out to have been reported stolen in Moosomin, Sask.
