Officers were called to the crash around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, on the 2400-block of Brandon Avenue, where an eastbound pickup truck had hit a parked vehicle.
The man driving the pickup had run from the scene before officers arrived, but a witness was able to give a description that helped them find him hiding nearby, near Buttercup Bay.
Appearing drunk, he was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He later refused a breathalyzer.
Police later found that the man had allegedly taken the truck without permission and that he didn’t have a valid driver’s licence.
Due to other pending charges, police say he was also bound by a court condition to abstain from alcohol.
Officers also later recognized him as the suspect in the theft of a 66-ounce liquor bottle from a local Liquor Mart earlier in the day, which was captured on video surveillance.
A 37-year-old Brandon man has been charged with impaired driving, refusing a breathalyzer, failure to remain at the scene of an accident, driving with no licence and other Highway Traffic Act offences in relation to the crash.
He has also been charged with theft of motor vehicle for the truck, and theft under $5,000 for the liquor. He was held overnight for a bail hearing yesterday morning.
