Man facing charges after failed getaway

The driver of an unregistered vehicle — who was also drunk — is facing extra charges since he wouldn’t stay pulled over and instead took police on a chase.

Unfortunately, the getaway came to a quick halt when the vehicle broke down.

It all started on Saturday afternoon, when a Treherne RCMP officer was driving along Highway 449 in the RM of Victoria. Spotting a vehicle without proper registration on the road about eight kilometres west of Treherne, the officer tried to pull it over.

However, after coming to a brief stop, the driver of the unregistered vehicle took off again and fled.

Police gave chase, despite the vehicle taking off at what they called a “significant rate of speed” and veering between both sides of the road.

However, the vehicle broke down a short distance later. Two males took off on foot, but police were able to ID them through the strong wind and rain and made a pair of arrests the next day.

Matthew Clement Vennard, 28, the alleged driver of the vehicle, faces charges of flight from police, dangerous driving, impaired driving, and driving while disqualified. He has been held in custody and will appear in Portage la Prairie court on July 21.

The passenger was released without charge.
