Man pleads guilty to assault, breaches

Looks like the counselling didn’t help.

A man pleaded guilty to assault on Monday for attacking his girlfriend as she breastfed their child, court heard — an assault that came after he’d recently taken anger management counselling.

Dexter Michael Mentuck, 24, pleaded guilty to assault and two breaches of recognizance.

He was originally charged with assault for an incident relating to the same woman, but a deal was struck in which the charge would be stayed if he took domestic violence and anger management counselling.

Mentuck took the counselling, but apparently the lesson didn’t stick.

Crown attorney Grant Hughes said that Mentuck attacked his common law girlfriend at their Brandon home on Saturday by punching, kicking, choking and headbutting her.

The attack began as the girlfriend was breastfeeding the couple’s 11-month-old son, Hughes said and continued while the child was still nearby.

The woman was left with a swollen forehead and bruises but the child wasn’t hurt.

As part of his release order for the January assault charge, Mentuck wasn’t supposed to have contact with his girlfriend. He’d also failed to inform court of a change in his address.

Defence lawyer Ryan Fawcett said the assault was more of a fight and Mentuck suffered injuries inflicted by his girlfriend in the form of a bite mark on his arm and a swollen forehead.

Mentuck maintained that he was the one holding the child when his girlfriend assaulted him.

Judge Krystyna Tarwid sentenced Mentuck with an 18-month conditional discharge with 60 hours of community service work. He’s also to take parenting courses and more anger management and domestic violence counselling.

Hughes stayed the assault charge from January.
