A man who broke into the garage that belonged to a homicide victim will be sentenced in the new year.
In court on Monday, 29-year-old Walter Wilfred French pleaded guilty to break and enter.
Crown attorney Grant Hughes said that, around 5:20 p.m. on May 9, police were called to the 200-block of First Street for a report of a suspicious person.
That address had been the scene of a fatal house fire barely more than a month before and the garage had escaped the blaze.
A witness told the police officer that three men had walked onto the property.
The officer then heard a commotion coming from the garage and intercepted French as he exited the building.
French, who had entered the garage through the door, was in search of “empties” (empty beer bottles), defence lawyer Bob Harrison told court.
French also pleaded guilty to a couple of subsequent offences — failing to attend court and breach of his release order by drinking.
A report has been ordered to look into French’s aboriginal background and sentencing is set for Jan. 14.
Aside from the fact that the garage was on the property, the break-in had nothing to do with the fatal fire.
Robert Long, 75, died in the fire that destroyed the two-storey home on the morning of April 4.
Ashtyn Franklin James Richard, 21, currently awaits trial on charges of manslaughter and arson with disregard for human life.
