Man trapped inside vehicle after rollover

The passenger of a rolled-over car was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries Thursday evening after being trapped inside while the car was submerged, police say.

Two men were inside the 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier, and were travelling on Highway 16 just east of Shoal Lake when, at about 6:30 p.m., the vehicle left the highway, rolled at least once and ended up on its roof in a water-filled ditch.

The driver, a 28-year-old B.C. man, was able to escape, but his passenger remained trapped inside for several minutes.

Passing motorists were eventually able to pull the car from the water with a truck and tow rope, freeing the 26-year-old passenger, also from B.C.

An RCMP traffic collision analyst is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
