A man accused of assaulting a sheriff, and a botched attempt to steal a pickup truck, has been released on bail.
During a bail hearing on Thursday, Crown attorney Marycia Kruk described how police smashed a window to pull a suspect from the stolen truck.
Kruk said that an MTS employee had called police on the afternoon of Dec. 6 to report that her pickup truck had been stolen while she was on the job.
She was working in a shed near Simplot Millennium Park in the city’s east end when her unlocked truck was taken.
Kruk said the woman’s coworker followed the stolen vehicle to the area of Victoria Avenue East, where police caught up with it.
However, the man in the vehicle wouldn’t co-operate, wouldn’t exit the vehicle and locked its doors.
Police managed to smash a window and arrested the suspect who suffered minor injuries by resisting arrest, Kruk said.
The next day, Kruk said, the man was unhappy with the result of his court appearance and became aggressive with a sheriff who was escorting him.
There was a struggle in which the prisoner grabbed the sheriff’s throat before the officer managed to get control.
Two other sheriffs helped to handcuff the prisoner and place him in a cell, Kruk said.
The accused is also alleged to have assaulted his girlfriend on Nov. 12.
Jeffery Basil Sykes, 36, is charged with assault, theft of motor vehicle, resisting/obstructing a peace officer and assaulting a peace officer.
The above allegations haven’t been proven in court.
Judge John Combs released Sykes on a bail with conditions and his case has been put to Jan. 17.
On a side note, the sheriff who was allegedly assaulted in this incident is the unlucky one who was bitten by a different prisoner during a separate incident in August 2011.
