A man who bit off part of a woman’s ear says his lottery win led to the attack.
Edgar Lee Hobson bit off the victim’s earlobe while celebrating his $1,000 windfall from a scratch-and-win ticket.
“You hurt this person and every time they look in a mirror for the rest of their life, they’re going to be looking at what you did to them,” Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta told Hobson in Brandon court this week.
On the evening of May 4, 2011, police were called to the Brandon hospital for a report that a woman had had her earlobe bitten off.
There, they met the victim who told them that she and other relatives had been drinking at Hobson’s 17th Street home.
A fight erupted when another man, the victim’s cousin, criticized Hobson’s parenting.
The two men started to fight, the victim stepped in to stop it, and it was then that Hobson bit into, and tore off, her left earlobe.
Police arrested Hobson at his home and he told them that he’d recently won $1,000 from a “scratch bingo ticket” and was celebrating.
The victim, meanwhile, told police that she planned to meet with a surgeon about the damage to her ear. An update on her condition wasn’t available for court.
The fight happened during a barbecue hosted by Hobson who had also supplied a case of beer, and police noted that he was highly intoxicated.
Hobson maintained that he didn’t remember much about the fight, but still took responsibility and pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm.
He believed, however, that his lottery win played a role in the events that led to the bite.
Hobson, 48, has a lengthy criminal record that includes previous violent offences. For this assault, Hewitt-Michta imposed four months in jail to be followed by 18 months probation.
