McGregor Ave. skating oval, Hanbury Sledding Hill opening today

Lace ’em up!

The skating oval west of the Community Services Complex on McGregor Avenue opens this morning at 11 a.m. for the season.

Along the oval, shacks, portable washrooms, fire pits and firewood are available to chase off today’s frigid temperatures.

Once the sun sets, lighting is available until 11 p.m. each night.

The Power Smart Waterfall of Lights is also lit from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. each night. Members of the public are encouraged to park in designated areas on McGregor Avenue or Hilton Avenue, and lace up and skate around the oval to take in the sights of the nearly 100 lit holiday displays.

The city reminds the public that no hockey sticks, pucks or pets are allowed on the oval.

The Hanbury Sledding Hill, located on Braecrest Drive in Sir Winston Churchill Park, also opens today. The hill has both shorter and longer runs for children of all ages and has a warm-up gazebo for public use, with lighting available until 11 p.m.

A sledding hill is also available to the public at the Wheat City Golf Course Located at 3500 McDonald Ave.

Although the city has seen its fair share of snow in the last week, the cross-country ski trails at the Recreation Centre are not yet open due to a lack of snow along the trails and the removal of Dutch elm by city staff.

For more information on any public winter activities provided by the City of Brandon’s community services department, call 204-729-2148.
