Brandon’s own Janaica Feranil has a shot at winning US$25,000 and being named the Voice of McDonald’s.
This is the fifth year the famous fast-food empire is running its worldwide employee singing contest and Feranil said she’s just happy to be included.
"Honestly, this is so surreal to me," she said. "I didn’t even think that I would be an option.
"Me and my cousin were bored on a Saturday night so we made this funny little audition tape."
Feranil, 17, found out about a week ago that she’s one of the top 12 contestants from across Canada competing for the title.
Feranil has been working at one of Brandon’s local McDonald’s restaurants for the past three years while attending Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School. She’s also been named a McDonald’s team leader and said she hasn’t had any issues balancing work and school.
"I’m kind of used to it already," she said.
When asked what she would do with her cash prize, she said she plans to pay back her parents for helping her get through school and put the rest towards her university education.
The contest’s first prize winner will receive US$25,000, while second place will take home US$17,500, third place will receive US$12,500 and fourth place will receive US$7,500.
The remaining 12 finalists will also each receive US$3,000 as a consolation prize.
In addition, for each global semifinalist, McDonald’s will donate US$1,000 to the Ronald McDonald House closest to the McDonald’s restaurant where the semi-finalist works and that employee will be awarded US$500 to put towards a work event of their choosing.
"We’re excited that Janaica has the chance to showcase her talents and compete among her peers," said George Sheard, Brandon McDonald’s owner and operator via email.
"We have some really talented people in our restaurants and we’re proud of the opportunities we offer our staff. Voice of McDonald’s is a great way to showcase our restaurant employees by providing them with this once-in-a-lifetime experience."
Voting for the Canadian portion of the contest ends on Monday. To vote, learn more about the contest and view Feranil’s submitted video, visit voiceofmcdonalds.com.
According to the website, a panel of judges will be looking at singing ability, creativity and onstage presence when choosing the winners.
