Men given discharge, community service for water tower break-in

Curiosity has cost a pair of men 30 hours of community service work.

They didn’t steal anything when they broke into the Carberry water tower simply to look around.

But the escapade earned them each an appearance before a judge.

“There was nothing to gain from this little adventure,” defence lawyer Ryan Fawcett said as one of the men was sentenced this week.

Kenneth William Formaniuk, 21, and Keyvan Bradley Jones, 19, both recently pleaded guilty to break, enter and mischief.

During Formaniuk’s court appearance this week, Crown attorney Grant Hughes said that police were investigating a number of break-ins around Carberry at the time of the water tower incident.

However, there’s no evidence these co-accused were involved in those other incidents.

But during questioning, Formaniuk admitted that he and Jones had broken into the water tower on July 6.

They hatched the plot while sharing gin at a barbecue at Formaniuk’s home.

The men used a screwdriver to break the lock and get inside but didn’t steal anything— they simply walked around.

Hughes said the duo then went to another building they intended to break into, but changed their minds when they realized it was “stupid.”

Formaniuk and Jones were sentenced on different dates by different judges — Sept. 17 and Aug. 27, respectively — but they received similar sentences.

They each received a one-year conditional discharge with 30 hours community service work.

All this trouble and no mention was made in court about what is inside the water tower — if not water.
