The case of a soldier accused of shooting another soldier during an altercation at CFB Shilo has been transferred to the military justice system.
In Brandon court on Thursday, Crown attorney Joanne Maynard stayed two counts of attempted murder and eight weapons charges that were laid against Clarence Joseph Stillman.
Maynard explained that the charges were stayed as a matter of procedure, to allow military prosecutors to exercise their jurisdiction under the National Defence Act.
The shooting happened on-base and the accused is a CFB Shilo-based soldier.
Master Cpl. Stillman, 33, was expected to immediately be re-arrested by military authorities, who will now lay charges under the military jurisdiction.
Further specifics on the fresh laying of charges and whether Stillman will be released from custody on bail weren’t immediately available on Thursday.
CFB Shilo MPs were called to a shooting at a base housing unit early Sunday morning.
A source told the Brandon Sun that one of the soldiers who lived at the home was shot once or twice in the leg.
It’s alleged that the victim had punched the shooter while ejecting him from the home at the end of a party. The man who was punched left, but returned with a semi-automatic handgun and shot his assailant in the leg.
It’s also alleged that the shooter then fired a shot at another man while he fled but that shot missed.
A suspect was quickly arrested nearby and police recovered a gun.
Stillman remained in custody as of Thursday morning.
