Brandon police have arrested a third suspect accused of sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl.
Const. Ron Burgess said it is believed multiple assaults took place between December 2009 and Feb. 5, 2012, the date of the complaint.
"Any sexual assault is disturbing, but any time a child of this age is involved, it’s even more so," Burgess said.
The assaults were separate incidents, involving individual suspects, but with the same child.
The first suspect — a 21-year-old man of no fixed address— was arrested in Brandon on March 15. He was charged with sexual assault and sexual interference. A second man, aged 19, was arrested on April 17. At that time, police said the man had been staying at the home where the assaults are alleged to have occurred.
He is to appear in court on June 11 to face sexual assault charges.
The continued investigation led to the arrest of a third suspect on Wednesday. A 24-year-old inmate of Headingley Correctional Centre is to appear in court on June 18 on charges of sexual assault, sexual interference and breaching probation.
It is not known if there is a connection between the three suspects.
Burgess said police are releasing very little information on this case, in an effort to protect the young victim.
"I don’t want to get into this too much, because … we’re worried about the possibility of someone identifying the victim," Burgess said.
