A man who allegedly waved a knife at police officers, who had to draw their guns before he was arrested, now faces additional charges related to a failed robbery and a failed carjacking.
He’s one of three men who were arrested Wednesday night after police descended on a downtown hotel where a patron said three people tried to steal a case of beer at knifepoint.
Police managed to track down three suspects in the area and arrested them despite some resistance.
That night, they were able to charge a 45-year-old man and a 22-year-old man with attempted robbery while armed with an offensive weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and resisting police.
An additional two charges of assaulting a police officer were also laid against the 22-year-old during that incident.
Police say he’s the one who wouldn’t lay down the knife when they tried to arrest him, and allegedly advanced toward them while brandishing it until they drew their guns.
That same 22-year-old also faces further charges in an attempted carjacking that was reported earlier the same evening.
Police say he approached a parked motorist downtown under the guise of asking for a cigarette.
However, a knife was pulled and he allegedly demanded that the vehicle be turned over.
The victim was able to get out of the vehicle and get away without being injured, although the 22-year-old suspect allegedly gave a brief chase.
For the attempted carjacking, the 22-year-old has also been charged with attempted robbery while armed with an offensive weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, theft under $5,000 and assault with a weapon.
He was held in custody to appear in court on Friday.
A third man was also arrested that night and police now say he allegedly assaulted an employee at the hotel where the robbery was reported. The employee was not significantly injured.
A 41-year-old Brandon man was charged with common assault and later released from custody to appear in court in March.
