Motorist charged after crash near festival site leaves pedestrian dead

Charges have been laid after a Minnedosa man was killed and two others injured when a driver hit three pedestrians early Monday near Rockin’ the Fields of Minnedosa.

The driver has been charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm and two counts of failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

Christopher Palaschuk, 39, appeared in Minnedosa court on Aug. 5. His next court appearance is scheduled for today.

Police reported the vehicle was travelling south along Provincial Road 262, commonly known as the beach road, early Monday morning when it first struck two people from Minnedosa — Shawn Cooper, 25, and a 23-year-old woman — who were walking on the shoulder of the highway around 3 a.m.

The vehicle kept travelling along the highway and then hit a 44-year-old Winnipeg man.

Cooper died in hospital, while the woman he was walking with was treated for injuries and later released. The second man was treated for his injuries on scene and released.
