In Brandon, local Catholics were shocked by the news Pope Benedict XVI plans to step down.
“I was really taken aback by that, I was certainly surprised,” said Rev. Michael Tkachuk of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church.
“We got a phone call early (Monday) morning… saying ‘look on the news, the Pope is resigning,’” he said. “Then I got an email from the metropolitan saying that we’re going to continue to use his name in our Divine Liturgies until the 28th of February, and then he’ll let us know whats going to happen after that.”
Tkachuk said he felt Pope Benedict XVI made a “noble” decision.
“I think a lot of people would continue on and on… and never think, ‘well, even though I can’t do it, I’m still going to stay on,’” Tkachuk said. “With him , I think its very noble of him to do that, to pass the authority on to somebody else because he can’t do it anymore.”
