Neepawa crash victims were from Elkhorn, Winnipeg: RCMP

Police have released more information about two drivers who were killed over the weekend in a head-on crash near Neepawa.

A 65-year-old Elkhorn man and a 77-year-old Winnipeg man died after their vehicles collided on Highway 16.

A 50-year-old woman was also sent to hospital following the crash with non-life-threatening injuries.

She was a passenger in a 2006 Chevrolet truck that was being driven east by the Elkhorn man when it collided head-on with a 2007 Dodge Caravan heading west.

The Winnipeg man behind the wheel of the Caravan was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Elkhorn man was taken from the scene in an ambulance, but later succumbed to his injuries, while the woman’s injuries were described as minor.

RCMP Sgt. Rob Lockhart said traffic analysts are still investigating the cause of the collision, which took place at about 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The weather was clear and sunny at the time, and there was no ice on that section of the highway.

Neepawa Mayor Ken Waddell said that he had seen a picture of the crash.

“The vehicles met semi head-on with the wheels locked,” he said Sunday.

“Debris from the vehicles stretched 100 yards before the vehicles came to rest.”
