The washed-out Highway 251 bridge over the Souris River east of Coulter is seen in 2011.
After years of waiting and anticipation, the bridge between Coulter and Waskada will officially open at the end of the month after it was washed away in the summer of 2011.
The important traffic corridor connecting the two communities on Highway 251 has been under construction since January 2013 and the grand opening will take place at 11 a.m. on March 29 on the east side of the bridge.
The bridge was a high priority for the government for a number of reasons, including the amount of oil drilling activity that is going on in the southwestern corner of Manitoba.
The bridge’s absence meant a 40-minute detour for some and as a result, some residents built an ice route across the Souris River in 2012, but the road was barricaded by the province over safety concerns.
