École New Era School hopes to rejuvenate its library — but they need your help.
Between Sept. 16 and Oct. 6, people can visit adoptaschool.indigo.ca and help the cause in three different ways.
The first is simply visiting the website, logging in and "adopting" New Era.
"Every 50 times the school is adopted that equals one new book for the school," said principal Chad Cobbe.
The second option is to donate funds. Every $12 donated online is equal to a new book for New Era.
The third way is to buy e-gift cards, which will also help the school.
New Era is part of Indigo’s Adopt A School program, thanks to the Coles book store in Shoppers Mall, which originally adopted the school.
New Era is the only Brandon school in the campaign.
The Adopt A School program began in 2009 and has put more than 80,000 books in 459 schools.
"Our goal is to put books into the hands of children in disadvantaged communities across the country and build lifelong literacy skills," states Indigo’s website.
New Era has a student population of 550, and the goal is to put a new book in the library for each student.
"As we’re getting kids engaged in reading, we need the resources that are engaging," Cobbe said.
Cobbe said the school has an aging book collection.
"Our student numbers have increased significantly," Cobbe states on the Indigo website. "Two years ago, our library had 3,500 books removed to go to another school. We are a core-area school with a diverse population and desperately need books that reflect our students."
