No arrests following robbery at Neepawa store

The search continues for a man who robbed a Neepawa grocery store clerk at knifepoint.

It’s the latest business in town to suffer at the hands of a criminal, as Neepawa has had to deal with a number of business burglaries lately.

“They kind of go in spurts. We have had a number of them in the community,” Neepawa RCMP Cpl. Derrick MacDiarmid said.

The Tim Tom Asian Grocery was robbed Monday evening, shortly before 6:30 p.m. The crime was captured on video surveillance.

A man had entered the store, which was open at the time, and lingered for a while. At one point, the female clerk ducked beneath the counter to arrange some stock.

The man had been watching and as the clerk stood up, he pulled a knife out of a bag, pointed it at her and demanded money.

His face was masked by a balaclava and the hood on his sweater was up. The robber handed the frightened clerk the bag and she stuffed some money from the till into it.

The thief then ran from the store just as a pair of customers entered. No one was harmed.

As of Wednesday afternoon, RCMP were still searching for a suspect.

The robber is described as six feet tall. He wore dark clothing and, besides the hooded sweater and balaclava, he wore gloves and boots.

Police haven’t released the amount of money that was stolen.

MacDiarmid confirmed that there have been a number of after-hours business and commercial break-ins lately that have resulted in vandalism and theft.

However, he said some of the crimes have been solved.

MacDiarmid said the solved break-ins don’t appear to be linked to any other crimes.

It remains unclear whether any unsolved burglaries are related to each other or the armed robbery.

There’s no indication, however, that the burglaries are linked to a Westman crime spree from last fall.

At least 13 Westman business were broken into last September. Multiple businesses were entered in Boissevain, Rivers and Souris.

Further afield, there were also burglaries in Treherne, St. Claude, Somerset, La Riviere, Holland and Notre Dame.

Rivers police and RCMP continue to investigate those crimes, but there haven’t been any arrests.
