According to CP spokesman Kevin Hrysak, there were no injuries and no major damage.
"There were about 35 cars backing eastward and one of the empty cars derailed," he said. "This led to the other two cars derailing as well."
The yard was not shut down, and crews were hoping to have the cars back on track as soon as possible.
Hrysak said Canadian Pacific is running an internal investigation to find out how the cars were turned around.
In 2008, a CP train had nine cars derail within Brandon limits, four of the cars were carrying anhydrous ammonia. The rail yard had to be shut down and residents were ordered to stay indoors.
