After a year-long search, Brandon University has hired a new vice-president (academic and provost).
Gervan Fearon, an award-winning Toronto educator, will join the BU team July 1.
"It’s a great university, wonderful faculty … just an outstanding team," Fearon said. "I’m looking forward to working with such good people."
Fearon holds a PhD in economics from the University of Western Ontario and is coming to Brandon from Ryerson University in Toronto, where he is currently dean of the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education.
Fearon previously served as an associate dean for academics and students at York University. He is the recipient of awards for teaching excellence and has been published in numerous academic journals. Prior to his work in post-secondary education, Fearon served with the Treasury Board at the Ontario Ministry of Finance as well as the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
BU president Deborah Poff said she is pleased to fill such a key role at the university with an experienced and well-rounded candidate.
"It’s critically important to get the right kind of person and I think we got the right kind of person," Poff said. "Aside from his significant experience as an administrator and his solid background as a scholar he’s also somebody who cares about where he lives. So I think we’ve got a really good fit there."
As part of the senior executive team, Fearon will develop and promote academic programming and research advancement. He will oversee the faculties of arts, sciences, health studies and education; and the School of Music.
He will also oversee graduate studies, Campus Manitoba, student and registrarial services, library services and information technology services.
"I’m really looking forward to being a member of the community and the university to contribute to the betterment of Brandon as a whole and indeed the province and country," Fearon said.
This will be the first time Fearon will call Manitoba home, however he has been to the province many times.
"I actually have a background in agriculture. My first two degrees were in agriculture economics, so I had many reasons to be in Manitoba," he said.
Fearon will move to Brandon with his wife, Kathy Moscou, a pharmacist. In the meantime, Dean Care will continue his role as acting vice-president (academic and provost).
