Pair of motorists facing impaired driving charges

Although recent months have seen a spike in impaired driving arrests following tips from drive-thru employees, Brandon police managed to nab two impaired drivers overnight Thursday — without any help from fast-food workers.

The first arrest was made just before 6 p.m. on Thursday, after a two-vehicle crash near 20th Street and Ottawa Avenue. No injuries were reported, but one of the drivers reportedly appeared to be drunk. Indeed, police say that when they arrived, the man who had been driving one of the vehicles looked highly intoxicated and was arrested. He later gave breath samples that were more than triple the legal limit.

A 36-year-old Brandon man is to appear in court on Feb. 21, on a charge of impaired driving.

Then, in the wee hours of Friday morning, police made a second collar. At about 1:50 a.m., a vehicle was stopped for speeding on the 400-block of 18th Street North. The man behind the wheel showed signs of intoxication and admitted that he had been consuming alcohol. He was arrested and gave breath samples that were over the legal limit.

A 54-year-old man from Niagara Falls, Ont., was to appear in court yesterday on charges of impaired driving and speeding.
