The 2012 Canadian Plowing Championships kick off near Kemnay today — the first time they’ve been held in Manitoba since 1970.

Competitors representing British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick will be taking part in the three-day competition. They’ve been in Brandon since the weekend for meetings, doing some tours and practising before today’s quest for the awards and prizes.
Manitoba’s representatives are Tom Ryall of Rivers, Nick Boundy of Boissevain, Ken Innes of St. Andrews and William Dunlop of Brandon. They won the chance to represent the province last fall at the Manitoba Plowing Match.
The winners in the senior categories will represent Canada at the World Plowing Championship at Olds College, Alta., in July 2013. More than 31 countries will be represented in Olds for the 60th anniversary of the world competition.
Today’s competition begins at 10 a.m. on a site just north of Kemnay owned by Ed Mazer. According to the Manitoba Provincial Plowing Association, directions for getting there are two miles west of Brandon, then one and a half miles north of the Trans-Canada Highway — keep an eye out for the signs. Admission is free.
Competition both Friday and Saturday begins at 8-8:30 a.m., with the championship wrapping up with the awards banquet Saturday evening.
Besides plowing, there will be horse walking and sulky plowing on Friday and Saturday starting at 11 a.m., and a threshing demonstration and tractor pull on Saturday.
