Police were called to Massey Manor early Thursday morning after a reported assault. One man was taken to hospital. Police continue to investigate the incident.
Following a vicious assault inside a downtown apartment building, one resident said there was so much blood in the hallway she could smell it.
Brandon Police Service was called to the Massey Manor affordable housing complex shortly before 3 a.m. on Thursday to find a man in his 50s with head injuries.
The man was transported from the Pacific Avenue location to the Brandon Regional Health Centre, where he was in serious but not life-threatening condition.
"I came out of the door and all I could smell was blood," said a neighbour who wished to remain anonymous.
"That’s all I saw."
"It was covered, there was blood all over the floor, all over the walls, going up the walls, all over his door," she told the Sun, still shaken by the events.
She awoke in the middle of the night to screaming. Concerned the noise was coming from her 13-year-old son, she quickly checked on him and surmised it was a dream and returned to bed.
It wasn’t until 8 a.m. that she saw the aftermath of the assault.
"I feel really bad because you don’t think to check the hall," she said.
Though the crime scene was mostly cleaned by 10 a.m., the neighbour said the smell of blood was still thick in the air and police tape remained on the victim’s door.
At least seven cruisers and two emergency vehicles were on scene after the call came in and police say it doesn’t appear a weapon was used.
The neighbour has been living at Massey Manor since it opened in September and said there has been some police activity at the building over the course of the last six months including three calls she made herself regarding pot smoke and partying complaints.
"That’s phenomenal compared to where I used to live," she said.
The facility does have security cameras, which will likely be part of the police investigation.
The former Massey Harris building was a project undertaken through a partnership between the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Brandon Friendship Centre and Habitat for Humanity. Construction began in 2009.
The CMHA has 30 units on the first two floors, including five emergency homeless shelters that open directly onto Pacific Avenue. The Brandon Friendship Centre has 14 rent-subsidized units, and Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corp. recently took ownership of 14 units.
The neighbour, one of at least a few single parents in the housing complex, said there are many young children in the building.
Police gave little information because the assault is currently under investigation.
No information on possible suspects is being released.
